What is a polygraph examination?

A polygraph examination, commonly known as a lie detector test, is a procedure that measures and records several physiological indicators—such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and skin conductivity—while a person answers a series of questions.

How it works:

  1. Pre-test phase: The examiner explains the process, reviews all questions to be asked on the examination, and ensures the subject understands what will happen during the exam.
  2. Test phase: The subject is asked a mix of questions while the instrument records physiological data.
  3. Post-test phase: The examiner analyzes the data to determine if there are signs of deception.

3 Result Categories:

  1. Deception Indicated (DI): The test shows significant physiological responses that suggest the person was not truthful in answering certain relevant questions.
  2. No Deception Indicated (NDI): The test shows no significant physiological responses, suggesting the person was truthful in their responses.
  3. Inconclusive: The data is too inconsistent or unclear to make a determination.
